Iowa Fertilizer Increases Investment and Job Commitments in Iowa

August 25, 2015

Iowans will benefit from additional jobs and capital investment through action taken at today’s Iowa Economic Development Authority board meeting. Iowa Fertilizer is now increasing their job commitment from 165 to 180 permanent positions, further increasing its long-term economic impact to the community. Iowa Fertilizer also increased their total investment in the state from an initial $1.4 billion to $1.9 billion.

In addition to today’s announcement, Iowa Fertilizer has exceeded original projections of construction jobs from 2,500 at the announcement to over 3,000 currently on site. Of Iowa Fertilizer’s current permanent employees, 135 were hired from within the state of Iowa. Since the project’s inception, the unemployment rate in Lee County has decreased from 11 percent in 2011 to less than 6 percent in March of 2015.

“We have always been committed to the state of Iowa, and we are pleased to announce an increased investment totaling $1.9 billion,” said Iowa Fertilizer President Shawn Rana. “This is exciting news for our company and our Iowa employees, and we look forward to a continued partnership with the great state of Iowa.”

Iowa Fertilizer continues to progress through the construction phase of its new greenfield nitrogen fertilizer production plant in Wever, Iowa. This plant will be the first world-scale natural gas-based fertilizer plant built in the United States in nearly 25 years and will help reduce the United States’ dependency upon imported fertilizers. Iowa Fertilizer is a wholly owned subsidiary of OCI N.V.

By late 2015, the new plant in southeast Iowa will begin producing between 1.5 and 2 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer each year. The output of the Iowa Fertilizer plant will significantly reduce U.S. dependence on imported fertilizer.

Iowa Fertilizer is a wholly owned subsidiary of Netherlands-based OCI N.V., a global leader in nitrogen fertilizer production as well as an engineering and construction contractor. OCI N.V. has an international fertilizer distribution platform spanning from the Americas to Asia.
