Deputy Maintenance Manager

OCI Nitrogen Iowa (OCI) is looking for a Deputy Maintenance Manager to join our team in Wever, Iowa. This position is a potential successor to the Maintenance Manager position. This individual will assist in plant asset optimization and overall maintenance strategy.

As a Deputy Maintenance Manager, you will:

  • Work alongside the Maintenance Manager to prepare for the successful transition of the Manager position upon retirement of current incumbent.
  • Plan, direct, and control the efforts of the maintenance department to maintain plant equipment and the site commensurate with good engineering practices.
  • Develop, maintain, and administer an organization qualified to maintain all equipment and facilities infrastructure in a safe and efficient working condition.
  • Manage all activities of the plant maintenance functions, ensuring all departmental activities adhere to company policies and are within budgeted costs and business priorities.
  • Emphasize effective preventative maintenance program that incorporates predictive techniques to minimize unscheduled downtime.
  • Analyze cost studies of proposals for new facilities and equipment in the department designed to secure reduced operating costs through improved uptime.
  • Develop objectives and standards of performance for projects required to meet departmental, divisional, and corporate goals.
  • Direct all maintenance and turnaround personnel and activities. Focuses on quality, timely and efficient maintenance service to ensure equipment availability is maximized.
  • Ensure equipment condition is maintained at the company accepted level, assets are protected, and utilization of resources is optimized at the lowest practical cost so that the company is receiving full value for maintenance spending.
  • Conduct audits to verify compliance.
  • Reestablish productivity and cost effectiveness of operations, workflow, and equipment.
  • Identify critical capital needed to improve efficiency and assets.
  • Assist with annual budget and conducts budget scenarios and analysis.
  • Be responsible for process and site maintenance.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to the Maintenance staff.
  • Manage the staff, processes, and activities for maintaining all plant machinery to ensure safe, continual, and efficient operation.
  • Oversee maintenance goal setting, KPI’s, activity scheduling, work performance and performance management to ensure measurable goals, proper workload distribution, goal satisfaction and effective staff performance management.
  • Control spare part costs and risks.
  • Direct and coordinate the plant CMMS (SAP PM, MM).
  • Lead root cause failure analysis as required.
  • Administer OSHA 1910 compliance.
  • Participate in corporate initiatives regarding maintenance and reliability.
  • Represent the company in outside discussions and technical forums.
  • Provide technical support for PHA’s.
  • Encourage maintenance best practices.
  • Ensure maintenance crafts are trained for PSM compliance.
  • Establish contracting strategies for both ongoing maintenance and turnarounds.
  • Review and prepare scope of work for turnarounds.
  • Develop and ensure procurement policies are being adhered to.
  • Be responsible for site mobile equipment procurement and maintenance.
  • Conduct presentations as required by senior management.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFCATIONS

Education           

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical Engineering, or other related technical field required, and combined with 12+ years of chemical or petrol-chemical industry or in related field and at least 10+ years’ related operations production supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years’ experience in maintenance with preference in the chemical industry or other industrial manufacturing. Fertilizer manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • 10+ years’ experience managing direct reports.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple teams and disciplines.
  • Experience in SAP PM & MM.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs.
  • Ability to use personal computer software for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of good engineering practices and API and ASME standards.
  • Broad knowledge of both fixed and rotating equipment.
  • Understands PSM and mechanical integrity.
  • Six Sigma Black belt a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills.
  • Warehousing and logistics experience a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, TEAMS, PowerPoint).
  • Proven track record of implementing improvements and meaningful KPI’s.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb straight ladders. Some work may require heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Wearing industrial chemical plant uniforms and PPE as required.
  • Wearing a respirator when/where required to perform inspections/job duties.
  • Confined space entry may be required.
